A devastating incident in Ogun State has led to the arrest of Adeola Adeyemo, a student-teacher from Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode. The 400-level trainee, undergoing her teaching practice at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School, Obada Oko, was involved in a classroom accident that caused an 11-year-old pupil, Alao Idera, to lose her right eye.
Incident Details
The unfortunate event occurred while Adeyemo was holding a cane during preparations for an end-of-year party. Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola explained that the pupil unexpectedly rushed toward the teacher, resulting in the cane accidentally piercing her eye. The incident has been described as an accident, with no malicious intent or disciplinary action involved.
Idera was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where doctors performed surgery to remove her damaged eye.
Aftermath and Attempted Suicide
Shaken by the gravity of the incident, Adeyemo reportedly attempted suicide upon learning that the pupil’s eye had been removed. Police intervened quickly, providing immediate medical attention. She is now stable and under investigation by the Ogun State Police Command.
Broader Concerns in Ogun State
This incident follows another tragedy in the state involving excessive corporal punishment. In October, Monday Arijo, a Senior Secondary School 2 student, died after being flogged 24 times and made to perform 162 frog jumps by a teacher at Obada Grammar School. The school was subsequently closed by the state government.
Calls for Improved Safety in Schools
The twin incidents have sparked renewed calls for stricter safety protocols and reevaluation of classroom practices in Nigerian schools. The Ogun State Police Command has emphasized the importance of adopting safer methods to ensure the well-being of both students and educators.
Stakeholders are urging education authorities to provide enhanced training for teachers, particularly student-teachers, on effective classroom management and safety measures to prevent such heartbreaking occurrences in the future.
