In JAMB registration, choosing “Awaiting Result” (AR) means you are applying without having your WAEC/NECO (O’level) results in hand. This lets you sit for the UTME exam as a current SS3 student or someone still waiting for final results. However, you must upload your O’level results to the JAMB portal (CAPS) as soon as they are released, otherwise you won’t be eligible for admission. In other words, AR is a temporary status that lets you apply early, but real admission requires the actual results later.
How to Upload WAEC/NECO Results to JAMB Portal
Once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB results come out (usually mid-year for WAEC and later for NECO), you should visit an accredited JAMB CBT centre to upload them. The center will scan your result and upload it to your JAMB profile for a small fee. After uploading, wait about 24 hours for it to reflect on your CAPS. It’s crucial to upload before admission lists are processed – JAMB warns that any candidate whose profile still shows “Awaiting Result” will be disqualified. In short: as soon as exam results are released, go to a JAMB center and upload immediately.
Why Universities Accept Awaiting Results
Nigerian universities allow awaiting results to help students who have finished secondary school (or are retaking exams) to apply without delay. This policy exists because “you don’t have to wait for your O’Level results before you apply” for admission. In practice, nearly all federal and state universities permit AR for UTME candidates. The idea is to expand access: students can write JAMB and even Post-UTME while waiting for final grades.
Keep in mind: Awaiting Result is only temporary. You must still meet all admission requirements once your results are in. If you fail to upload valid scores or meet cutoffs, your admission will be void. Always double-check your profile on JAMB CAPS and follow any extra instructions from your chosen school.

In summary, awaiting result simply lets you apply before getting your WAEC/NECO results. You should upload your results as soon as they are released, following JAMB’s instructions. Luckily, almost all federal and state universities in Nigeria accept awaiting-result candidates, as long as you eventually submit valid scores. To improve your chances, keep checking the official JAMB portal and university admission notices for any updates or specific requirements. Admission rules can change, so always rely on credible sources like the JAMB website and your chosen school’s announcements for the latest information. Good luck with your applications!
