ASUU to FG: Address Our Demands or Prepare for January Strike—Nationwide Impact Ahead!

Table of Contents

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has delayed a nationwide strike, granting the Federal Government more time to address unresolved grievances. However, ASUU has warned of decisive action in January 2025 if no progress is made.

Ongoing Frustration

ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s lack of concrete action despite months of negotiations and extended deadlines. Speaking to the Nigerian Tribune, Osodeke stated:

“Several months later, the government has not done anything concrete as regards all our issues. If this continues, we will take decisive action early January.”

In November, the union held a general meeting where members reluctantly agreed to extend the government’s grace period to the end of December, hoping for resolutions. However, substantial progress has yet to be seen.

Union’s Standpoint

ASUU clarified that a fresh strike notice is unnecessary, as the union has been extending the initial notice in compliance with labor laws. Negotiations with the government’s renegotiation committee have stalled, with no feedback provided weeks after their last meeting.

Osodeke highlighted the union’s reluctance to strike but emphasized the need for decisive action if issues remain unresolved:

“We only embark on strikes when members have been pushed to the wall. This is not our preferred course of action.”

What’s Next?

The union will reconvene in early January 2025 to decide its next steps. ASUU appeals to Nigerians for understanding, stressing that their demands are essential for the betterment of the educational sector. If the government continues to neglect its commitments, ASUU warns it will have no choice but to act decisively in the new year.
