KWASU was conceived under the leadership of Governor Bukola Saraki, who, on July 11, 2007, appointed a planning committee led by former governor Alhaji Mohammed Shaaba Lafiagi to lay the groundwork for the university. On December 24, 2008, the Kwara State University Bill was passed, and on February 9, 2009, the university received its operating license from the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Initially, the university had a small student population and three faculties: Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Humanities and Culture. Over the years, KWASU has expanded significantly, now boasting eight faculties and several specialized research centers and institutes.
