The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), a federal government university, is situated in Owerri West, Owerri, the capital city of Imo State, Nigeria.

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri is the oldest university in Nigeria, having been founded in 1980. Shehu Shagari, the first Executive President of Nigeria, appointed the first interim council and created the university by executive decree.

  • Motto: Technology for Service
  • Type of Institution: Public

It was the first of three universities of this kind to be established by the Nigerian Federal Government, which aimed to create a University of Technology in every geopolitical zone, especially in states without traditional universities.

Since April 13, 2021, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has been a partner university of the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB), which provides A/Level Programs to students wishing to enter the university through Direct Entry (DE). FUTO currently accepts students into the JUPEB Program on an annual basis. Prof. Nnenna Oti was elected Vice-Chancellor on April 13, 2021, succeeding Francis Chukwuemeka Eze, whose term ended on June 19, 2021.

It is among the best universities in Western Africa for technology. People from all around West Africa and beyond make up its student body. It is one of the oldest federal universities in West Africa and the only one in the southeast of Nigeria.

The homesteads and autonomous villages that around FUTO all donated land that was purchased for the university’s expansion. Ihiagwa, Obinze, Umuoma, Nekede, Eziobodo, Avu, Okolochi, Obibiezena, and Emeabiam are these communities. A recently constructed route that links the two previously mentioned important roads splits it in half between Obinze and Naze. The Otamiri River flows across the area from north to south, passing through a significant physical feature formed by the lovely vegetation in its river basin.
