Opay Digital Company has awarded scholarships totaling N12 million to 40 students from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, offering financial aid to students in need and reinforcing its commitment to social responsibility.

Scholarship Grant and MoU Signing

The scholarships, each worth N300,000, were officially disbursed in a ceremony on 8th November 2024 in the Vice-Chancellor’s office. During the event, Opay and ABU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalizing this initiative.

Opay’s Managing Director, Mr. Dauda Gotring, highlighted that this scholarship aligns with the company’s commitment to giving back to society and emphasized Opay’s special connection to ABU.

Opay’s Vision and Community Support

Mr. Gotring elaborated on Opay’s mission to support financial inclusion and revealed additional plans to empower women in Zaria through entrepreneurial programs. This aligns with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s digital policies, as Opay aims to reach underserved communities across Nigeria.

Appreciation from ABU’s Management

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kabiru Bala, expressed gratitude for the scholarship initiative, noting its significance in addressing the financial needs of ABU students. He welcomed Opay’s additional plans for women empowerment, emphasizing the university’s dedication to uplifting its students and local community.

Professor Bala urged the scholarship recipients to manage the funds responsibly for their educational benefit.

Selection and Screening of Beneficiaries

Dr. Sa’adatu Muhammad Makarfi, Director of the Counselling and Human Development Centre, detailed the thorough screening process that narrowed down the applicants from 959 identified indigent students to the 40 final beneficiaries, ensuring that the most vulnerable students received the support.

Event Attendance

Senior ABU officials and Opay representatives attended the event, including Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Dean of Student Affairs, and Director of Public Affairs. The event underscored a major partnership milestone, reinforcing ABU’s mission to support its students through external collaborations.
