The Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships are awarded competitively to students with outstanding research potential. These scholarships are designed to help cover living expenses while pursuing a Higher Degree by Research (HDR).

Living Allowance

Recipients of the RTP Scholarship receive a living allowance of AUD $32,192 per year (2024 rate). This amount is indexed annually on January 1st to keep up with the cost of living.

Scholarship Duration

• PhD: The RTP Scholarship provides funding for 3.5 years, with no extension available. It’s important to note that this is shorter than the maximum candidature period, which is 4 years.
• Masters: Funding is available for 2 years with no extension.

Tuition Fees

• International Students: Unless granted a Tuition Fee Scholarship, international HDR candidates are required to pay tuition fees for the full duration of their research degree. The exact fees for 2024 can be found in the official fee schedule.
• Domestic Students: The RTP Fees Offset covers the tuition costs for domestic candidates throughout the research program, with no extension available. The value of this offset is equal to the 2024 tuition fee rates.

Relocation Allowance

RTP recipients relocating to Tasmania to pursue their research degree may be eligible for a relocation allowance of up to AUD $2,000 to help with moving expenses.
