Program Overview
This scholarship program is designed for 25–30 outstanding candidates who will study for six months at the University of Pretoria and spend the remaining six months at one of 12 partner universities across Africa.
Graduates automatically become members of the prestigious HRDA Alumni Association, which includes over 500 human rights professionals currently working with institutions such as the United Nations, African Union, and civil society organizations across the continent.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be a citizen of an African country
- Be invited to apply for the LLM/MPhil program at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria
- Hold a first degree in Law (LLB or equivalent), or an honours degree in a field related to human rights and democratisation
Additional selection factors include:
- Demonstrated interest and commitment to human rights in Africa
- Strong potential for impact in their home countries (multiplier effect)
- Consideration for geographic balance, gender equity, and representation of vulnerable communities (e.g. persons with disabilities, LGBTI, indigenous populations)
