The University of Liberia (UL) is set to reopen on January 13, 2025, as announced by Presidential Press Secretary Kula Fofana on social media. The reopening follows months of closure, which had caused widespread frustration among students, faculty, and other stakeholders.
Leadership Transition in Focus
The announcement also revealed plans to appoint a new university president, with administrative measures underway to address the institution’s ongoing challenges. The lack of permanent leadership has been a major concern, stalling progress on critical institutional matters.
In November, the University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA) voiced its dissatisfaction with the delayed appointment of a permanent president. During a General Assembly at the Fendall Campus, ULFA emphasized the urgent need for decisive leadership to end the administrative stalemate.
Faculty Demands
ULFA President, Dr. Edna G. Johnny, highlighted the expiration of the Acting President’s mandate and confirmed that the “Presidential Search Committee” had submitted its recommendations. ULFA outlined several demands, including:
- Immediate appointment of a new university president.
- Implementation of a 40% salary increase for faculty members.
- Payment of outstanding salary arrears.
- Improved working conditions for staff.
- A comprehensive audit of the university’s operations to ensure transparency.
ULFA has stated that academic activities will not resume unless these demands are met.
Student and Faculty Concerns
As the reopening date approaches, students and faculty remain vigilant, awaiting tangible actions from the government to address these pressing issues. However, uncertainty surrounding the leadership transition continues to cast a shadow over preparations for the new academic session.
The reopening marks a pivotal moment for the University of Liberia, as stakeholders hope for solutions to the challenges that have plagued the institution.
