The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) celebrates the recent appointments of Prof. Nazmat Surajudeen-Bakinde and Prof. Medinat Folorunso Salman as Vice Chancellors of two prestigious institutions, marking a significant achievement for the university’s faculty.

Surajudeen-Bakinde Becomes Vice Chancellor of Gambian University

Prof. Nazmat Surajudeen-Bakinde, a distinguished professor of electrical engineering, has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Applied Sciences and Technology (USET) in The Gambia. The official letter confirming her appointment was issued by the Gambian Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology and delivered to the Nigerian High Commission in The Gambia on September 17, 2024.

Educational Background and Experience
Prof. Surajudeen-Bakinde is an accomplished academic with a Bachelor’s degree (1997) and Master’s degree (2004) from UNILORIN, followed by a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Electronics from the University of Liverpool, UK, completed in 2010. Her extensive experience includes roles as an examiner for the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and as the Assistant Director of Administration at UNILORIN’s Centre for International Education.

Research Interests and Contributions
With a focus on telecommunications, Prof. Surajudeen-Bakinde has published over 70 research papers and book chapters, with research interests spanning Ultra-Wideband Technology, Channel Equalisation, Internet of Things, and Sustainable Energy Diversity. She is a recognized reviewer for numerous local and international journals.

Salman Appointed Pioneer Vice Chancellor of Kwara State University of Education

Prof. Medinat Folorunso Salman, known for her leadership in Mathematics Education, has been named the Acting Vice Chancellor of the newly established Kwara State University of Education (KWASUED) in Ilorin. Her appointment was announced on September 24, 2024, by the Kwara State Government.

Academic Journey and Career Achievements
Prof. Salman’s academic credentials include a Bachelor of Education from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and advanced degrees from UNILORIN. Her career at UNILORIN began in 1999, during which she rose to the rank of Professor in 2012. She has served as the Dean of the Faculty of Education and the Head of the Department of Science Education.

Professional Contributions and Research
Prof. Salman’s research focuses on Mathematics Education, gender issues in STEM, and educational innovations. Her contributions extend to various roles within the Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN) and the National Universities Commission (NUC), showcasing her commitment to advancing education on both state and national levels.
