The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced a suspension of its foreign scholarship programme for academic staff, effective January 1, 2025.
Reasons for the Suspension
The decision, approved by the TETFund Board of Trustees, is attributed to:
- Escalating costs associated with foreign training.
- Increased cases of scholars not returning after their study periods abroad.
Arch. Sonny S. T. Echono, the Executive Secretary, stated that this policy aims to:
- Enhance local capacity building by redirecting resources into domestic tertiary institutions.
- Reduce dependence on foreign exchange to ensure sustainable development within Nigeria’s education sector.
New Focus on Local Training
Beneficiary institutions have been instructed to channel efforts into implementing robust local training programmes. This shift will:
- Foster professional development of academic staff within Nigeria.
- Strengthen the country’s higher education system while retaining investment locally.
Provisions for Current Scholars
Academic staff already enrolled in the foreign scholarship programme will continue to receive funding until their scheduled intervention period concludes, ensuring existing commitments are upheld.
This strategic policy underscores a commitment to prioritizing Nigeria’s long-term educational growth and self-reliance in academic development.
