A tragic incident has unfolded in Ogun State, where a teacher trainee, Adéọlá Adeyemo, was arrested following an accident that caused an 11-year-old pupil, Alao Idera, to lose her right eye. Adeyemo, a 400-level student from Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, was conducting her teaching practice at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in Obada Oko when the unfortunate event occurred.
Details of the Incident
The accident happened at around 3 p.m. during preparations for an end-of-year party. According to the Ogun State Police Command, Adeyemo was holding a cane when Idera suddenly rushed toward her. In the commotion, the cane accidentally pierced the pupil’s eye.
The injured child was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where doctors had to surgically remove her damaged eye.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola clarified that there was no deliberate act of punishment or fault on the part of the teacher or pupil, describing it as a purely accidental event.
Aftermath and Investigation
Following the incident, Adeyemo reportedly attempted to ingest harmful substances in a suicide attempt after learning the extent of the child’s injury. Police intervened promptly, rushing her to the hospital, where she was treated and stabilized.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that Adeyemo is under investigation to determine the full circumstances of the accident.
Broader Context and Safety Concerns
This incident follows another tragedy in the state, where a teacher at Obada Grammar School, Azamdjo Elijah, was arrested after the death of a Senior Secondary School 2 student, Monday Arijo. The student died after being instructed to perform 162 frog jumps and receiving 24 strokes of the cane.
Police have emphasized the need for schools and teachers to prioritize safety and adopt preventive measures to avoid such devastating incidents.
Public Reactions and Lessons
The twin incidents in Ogun State have sparked widespread concern over safety standards in schools. Stakeholders, including educators and parents, are urging a review of classroom practices, especially concerning the use of disciplinary tools like canes.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue, with hopes of preventing such occurrences in the future.
