The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially confirmed an increase in the monthly allowance for Corps Members to ₦77,000, effective from March 2025. This announcement was made by the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, during his visit to Corps Members at the NYSC zonal offices in Wuse and Garki, Abuja.
This development comes as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the welfare of Corps Members and ensure that they receive adequate financial support throughout their service year. The increase in allowance reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the economic well-being of young graduates participating in the scheme.
Federal Government’s Commitment to Corps Members
During his address, the NYSC DG assured Corps Members that the government is fully committed to ensuring that the new allowance is paid promptly and without issues. He emphasized that proper record-keeping and verification processes are in place to prevent any delays or discrepancies in payments.
He also encouraged Corps Members to remain dedicated to their primary assignments, noting that the NYSC scheme plays a crucial role in national unity, leadership development, and cultural integration. He urged them to embrace the values of discipline, hard work, and teamwork, as these are essential qualities that will help them in their careers and personal development.
Furthermore, Brigadier General Nafiu acknowledged the efforts of those who established the NYSC Scheme, stating that their vision of fostering national integration and youth development remains relevant today. He called on all stakeholders, including government agencies, private organizations, and the general public, to continue supporting the NYSC in its mission.
Corps Members Express Appreciation for the Allowance Increase
During the visit, Zaka Deborah Alheri (FC/24A/5831), a Corps Member serving in Abuja, spoke on behalf of her colleagues and expressed gratitude to the NYSC leadership for pushing for the allowance increment. She highlighted how the increase would greatly benefit Corps Members, helping them to cover their living expenses, transportation, and other essential needs during their service year.
Many Corps Members have long called for an increase in the monthly allowance due to the rising cost of living in Nigeria. With this adjustment, they are now in a better position to meet their daily financial obligations without excessive strain.
