The National Examinations Council (NECO) has issued a stern warning to schools and stakeholders, calling for an end to the fraudulent practice of registering candidates by proxy for its examinations. This unethical behavior, which has led to cases of identity theft and the issuance of fake results, is a growing concern that NECO is determined to combat.

NECO’s Crackdown on Exam Malpractice

To curb these malpractices, NECO has implemented several strict measures:

  1. Biometric Data Capturing: This technology ensures that only the genuine candidate registered for the exam will sit for it, reducing the chances of impersonation.
  2. Customized Answer Booklets: Each candidate now uses an answer booklet unique to them, making it difficult to switch exam papers or results.
  3. Embossed Photographs and Date of Birth: NECO now includes the candidate’s photo and birthdate on their certificates to prevent forgery and ensure authenticity.

Introducing NECO e-Verify

NECO has also launched NECO e-Verify, a digital platform for verifying the authenticity of NECO certificates. This tool is accessible online and allows individuals and institutions to check the legitimacy of certificates issued by the examination body. Any certificate that cannot be confirmed through the platform is deemed fraudulent.

Call for Genuine Registrations

NECO is urging schools and educational stakeholders, especially state ministries of education, to ensure that only legitimate candidates are registered for NECO examinations. The Council’s commitment to preventing exam malpractice is evident in its decision to withhold results of candidates found guilty of impersonation during the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal.

Through these proactive efforts, NECO aims to safeguard the integrity of its examinations and restore trust in the certification process. Schools and candidates are urged to adhere strictly to these guidelines to avoid penalties and ensure a fair examination environment.
