The National Examinations Council (NECO) has issued a firm warning to school owners and stakeholders, cautioning them against enrolling candidates for its exams by proxy. In a statement released on Monday by the acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, NECO expressed concerns over the rising cases of identity theft and fraudulent results stemming from such practices.

NECO’s Stand Against Malpractice

NECO reiterated its commitment to eliminating all forms of examination malpractice. The council emphasized that fraudulent registrations often lead to impersonation and fake results, undermining the integrity of the examination process.

To combat these issues, NECO has implemented several measures, including:

  • Biometric data capturing to verify the identity of candidates.
  • Customised answer booklets to ensure authenticity.
  • Embossing photographs and date of birth on original certificates to prevent identity theft.
  • The introduction of NECO e-Verify, an online platform that allows institutions and employers to confirm and verify NECO results.

Verification of Results

The council warned that any NECO certificate that cannot be authenticated via the e-Verify platform should be regarded as fake. School owners and state ministries of education are urged to ensure that only genuine candidate details are used during registration for all NECO-conducted exams.

Consequences of Impersonation

NECO disclosed that candidates involved in impersonation during the recently concluded 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal had their results withheld. This move is part of NECO’s ongoing efforts to maintain examination integrity and deter malpractice.

A Call for Compliance

NECO has urged school owners and relevant authorities to adhere strictly to the registration guidelines, ensuring that only legitimate candidates are enrolled. The council’s robust policies aim to safeguard the credibility of its examinations and protect the academic future of genuine students.
