The Lagos State University (LASU) Alumni Association, Lagos Branch, celebrated its 40th anniversary by honoring 32 distinguished Nigerians on Sunday. The event, which brought together notable alumni and guests, recognized the achievements of the honorees and celebrated their contributions to society.
Vice-Chancellor’s Call for Collaboration
In her opening remarks, LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, emphasized the importance of alumni contributions to the growth of the institution. She urged attendees to use the gathering as an opportunity to connect and collaborate, while reflecting on how they could support current and future LASU students.
“Each award reflects the passion of our alumni and serves as a reminder of our commitment to serving others,” said Olatunji-Bello, adding, “Your network determines your net worth. Let’s use this gathering to connect and support those just starting their journeys.”
Keynote Speaker’s Challenge to Alumni
Mr. Lukmon Amolegbe, the keynote speaker, called on LASU alumni to actively contribute to their alma mater by funding projects such as vehicle refurbishment, library improvements, and facility renovations. He highlighted how inflation is affecting the university and challenged alumni to take action.
“We must return to LASU with renewed passion and purpose. I encourage us to implement intervention projects, such as refurbishing vehicles, renovating facilities, and supporting sports,” Amolegbe said.
Proposed Alumni Post-Graduate Halls of Residence
The Chairman of LASU Alumni, Lagos Branch, Mr. Satar Omolola, shared plans for an alumni-sponsored post-graduate hall of residence. He noted that the structure would serve as a home for future students and stand as a legacy for the alumni who contributed to LASU’s success.
Awardees Recognized for Contributions
Among the 32 honorees were prominent figures such as General Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd.), Oba Ademola Eleguishi, Mr. Fatai Sonoiki, LASU Vice-Chancellor, Senator Yunus Akintunde, Senator Idiat Adebule, CP Olatunji Disu, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, and Honorable Mudashiru Obasa. Each of these individuals was recognized for their exceptional contributions in their respective fields.
Commitment to Supporting Peers
Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, used the occasion to announce her commitment of one million naira to assist fellow alumni in need. She encouraged others to contribute to a platform designed to support alumni struggling with school fees and housing expenses.
Police Commissioner’s Gratitude
Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamatu, expressed his gratitude for being honored, stating, “I often wonder what I’ve done to deserve this award, but it inspires me to do more.” He also encouraged increased collaboration between alumni and law enforcement to further support community safety.
A Celebration of Legacy and Impact
The event not only honored individual achievements but also underscored the collective impact of LASU alumni in various sectors. Through their continued support, the alumni association aims to further enhance the university’s legacy and foster the development of future generations.
