The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released critical updates following the conclusion of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). As of Thursday, May 8, 2025, several key developments have been confirmed, impacting millions of candidates across Nigeria. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of the latest JAMB updates:

2025 UTME Results Released – Over 1.5 Million Candidates Score Below 200

JAMB has officially announced the release of the 2025 UTME results. Out of 1,955,069 candidates who sat for the examination, only 12,414 candidates scored 300 and above, representing just 0.63% of the total candidates. However, a significant 1,483,703 candidates, accounting for over 75%, scored below 200.
This drop in performance compared to previous years has raised concerns among educational stakeholders regarding the overall preparedness of candidates.

Underage Candidates – Only 467 Qualify for Exceptional Score Benchmark

Among the 40,247 underage candidates (those below 16 years) who were permitted to take the UTME under a special practice model, only 467 managed to score 280 and above, the benchmark set by JAMB for exceptional consideration. This accounts for just 1.16% of underage candidates.
JAMB has reiterated that no candidate will be considered for admission unless they are at least 16 years old by September 30, 2025, unless they meet the criteria for exceptional performance.

Exam Malpractice – 2,157 Candidates Under Investigation

JAMB has disclosed that 97 candidates have been flagged for direct involvement in exam malpractice. Additionally, 2,157 candidates are under investigation for suspected irregularities, including impersonation, the use of unauthorized materials, and biometric discrepancies.
In total, 71,701 candidates were absent from the exam despite being registered. Some absentees faced biometric issues and are currently under review. If cleared, they will be rescheduled for a future UTME session.

Support for Special Needs Candidates

JAMB has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive education by extending support to candidates with disabilities. According to the board, over ₦200,000 is allocated per deaf candidate to ensure they receive adequate assistance during the examination.
In Bauchi State, the Federal Government sponsored 37 visually impaired candidates for the 2025 UTME, providing special arrangements to facilitate their participation. JAMB’s Registrar emphasized that all candidates, regardless of disability, will be considered for admission based on their performance.

Fraud Alert – Beware of Rescheduling Scams

JAMB has issued a stern warning to candidates about fraudulent agents claiming to offer exam rescheduling services for a fee of ₦15,700. The board clarified that no payment is required for exam rescheduling and that legitimate updates regarding rescheduling will only be communicated through official JAMB channels.
Candidates are advised to avoid engaging with unofficial agents or third-party platforms making such claims.

Important Reminders for Candidates

  • Check your UTME results only on the official JAMB result-checking portal.
  • Stay updated through the official JAMB website and bulletins.
