The University of Ibadan (UI) has recently faced a significant setback as severe flooding damaged several student hostels, resulting in the destruction of essential property, including books, foodstuffs, and personal belongings. This incident has left many students grappling with the loss of crucial items, further complicating their academic activities and daily living.

Flood Devastates UI Student Hostels, Leading to Major Losses

On Friday, heavy rain caused flash floods that swept through parts of the university, particularly affecting several hostels. Among the hardest hit was Awo Hostel, where about 16 rooms on the underground floor were completely submerged. Students in these areas experienced extensive property loss, with many finding their belongings floating in the floodwaters.

The flood not only ruined study materials but also damaged food items, clothes, and personal documents, all critical for students in the midst of their exams. Many students who were away at the time of the incident returned to find their rooms completely flooded, with little to salvage.

Extensive Damage and Concerns for the Future

Students who witnessed the flood described the extent of the damage. Toilets, kitchens, and other essential facilities were rendered unusable as water filled the hostel. For students already under pressure from exams, the flood added another layer of stress, with some losing essential study materials that they were relying on.

One student mentioned that even items stored in cupboards and locked away for safety were not spared, highlighting the severity of the flooding.

Calls for Improved Flood Control Measures

This devastating incident has raised concerns about the infrastructure of the university and its ability to handle extreme weather events. The affected students and staff are urging the university administration to take immediate steps to prevent future occurrences by improving drainage systems and other flood prevention measures.

While efforts are being made to assess the full extent of the damage, the incident underscores the need for better planning and support systems to protect students’ well-being and academic progress.
