FG Bans Registration of New Polytechnics and Monotechnics

Table of Contents

In a significant development, the Nigerian government, through the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has announced a one-year moratorium on the registration of new polytechnics and monotechnics across the country. This new policy aims to curb the growing number of these institutions and ensure that existing ones operate at optimal capacity.

Key Points from the Announcement:

  • Moratorium on Polytechnics and Monotechnics: No new applications for polytechnics and monotechnics will be accepted for the next 12 months.
  • Exemption for Health Institutions: Health institutions are exempted from this ban due to the ongoing enrollment challenges they face.
  • Fee Structure for Existing Applications:
    • Polytechnics awaiting ministerial approval will need to pay an application fee of N4 million and a processing fee of N2 million per program.
    • Monotechnics are required to pay an application fee of N2 million and a processing fee of N1 million per program.
    • Both polytechnics and monotechnics have a 30-day window to pay these fees or risk termination of their registration process.
  • Health Institutions Registration Fees: Health institutions will follow the same fee structure as monotechnics for their registration.

Objective of the Moratorium

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) highlighted that the goal of this policy is to better manage the technical and vocational education sector and ensure institutions operate within their approved capacity. It is also aimed at improving the quality and availability of technical education, which has faced challenges due to overpopulation and inadequate infrastructure.

This development is set to have an impact on the growth of polytechnic and monotechnic institutions, potentially reshaping the landscape of technical education in Nigeria over the coming year.
