The Federal Government of Nigeria has granted operational licenses to 11 new private universities, expanding the nation’s higher education sector. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced this after the 24th Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
These universities have successfully met the 13-step approval process set by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and are expected to enhance educational opportunities, research, and innovation.

Temporary Suspension of New Private University Licenses
Dr. Tunji Alausa further announced a temporary halt in granting new private university licenses. However, this suspension does not affect institutions that are already in the advanced stages of the approval process.
Universities that have completed the second phase of assessment will still be considered for approval if they meet the necessary requirements. Some institutions are expected to receive FEC approval in the coming months.
The government acknowledges that many applicants have invested significantly in establishing new universities and remains committed to carefully reviewing their applications.
Benefits of the Newly Approved Universities
The approval of these institutions aligns with the federal government’s strategy to expand access to university education in Nigeria. With a growing population and limited spaces in public universities, private institutions bridge the gap and offer more learning opportunities.
The Minister of Education emphasized that these universities will operate under strict NUC guidelines to ensure academic excellence. Additionally, their establishment will:
- Increase employment opportunities for both academic and non-academic staff.
- Promote research and technological advancements in Nigeria.
- Reduce pressure on existing public universities by offering students more educational options.
From the next admission cycle, students can confidently apply to any of the 11 newly approved private universities, knowing that their programs meet NUC standards and are fully accredited.
