Tragedy struck in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Thursday, January 2, 2025, when a police officer celebrating a colleague’s promotion accidentally discharged his firearm, fatally striking Ifeoluwa Adekalu, a young mother of one.
Incident Details
The unfortunate event occurred near the Oke-Ila police station, where Ifeoluwa was reportedly standing across the road. According to eyewitness accounts, the officer, who had come to the station from another division, fired his gun in jubilation over a colleague’s promotion. A stray bullet struck Ifeoluwa as she returned from paying her accommodation rent.
Efforts to save her life proved futile, as she was rushed to a hospital and pronounced dead upon arrival.
One eyewitness shared, “She was just passing by when the bullet hit her in front of a shop opposite the police station. It was a tragic accident.”
Another source revealed that Ifeoluwa had just disembarked from a commercial motorbike and appeared to be heading toward the police station when the incident occurred.
Police Response
The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, AIG Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the incident and stated that the officer involved had been disarmed and detained.
Adeniran assured the public that the officer would face a thorough interrogation in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Police Act.
The death of Ifeoluwa Adekalu has left her family and the Ado Ekiti community in mourning, raising concerns about firearm safety and discipline within the police force. Authorities are expected to ensure justice is served and to implement stricter measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
