ABU Inducts 885 Engineering Graduates into COREN and NSE

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, recently inducted 885 engineering graduates into the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), marking a significant milestone for these young professionals. The induction ceremony took place on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Maman Kontagora Square on the university’s main campus in Samaru, Zaria.

Vice-Chancellor’s Message to Graduates

The Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Prof. Kabiru Bala, addressed the new inductees, with his message delivered by Prof. M.S. Shehu, the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences. He emphasized the importance of resilience, integrity, and ethical practice as they begin their engineering careers, urging them to uphold these values as they enter the profession.

COREN’s Vision for Engineering Education

Prof. Sadiq Zubair Abubakar, President of COREN, outlined several new initiatives aimed at enhancing engineering education in Nigeria. He highlighted a mandatory internship program, planned before graduates begin their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), which aims to better prepare them for the engineering field. Additionally, Prof. Abubakar announced a new requirement for engineers to renew their professional licenses annually, aligning Nigerian engineering practices with international standards. This measure is expected to open more opportunities for Nigerian engineers in both local and global markets.

Address from NSE

The NSE President, Margaret Aina Oguntala, represented by Engr. Agee A. Agba, Chairman of the NSE Zaria branch, also addressed the graduates. She encouraged them to actively participate in the engineering profession, stressing the importance of dedication and ethical conduct. Oguntala highlighted the diverse opportunities in engineering, encouraging the graduates to make meaningful contributions to society through their work.

Insights on Professional Licensure

Engr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Maimaje, an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, delivered a guest lecture on the significance of professional licensure. He emphasized that maintaining a professional license can be a critical factor in career progression for engineers, opening doors to further opportunities and enabling them to reach their full potential within the industry.

Awards for Academic Excellence

The event concluded with the presentation of awards and cash prizes to outstanding graduates who achieved top honors in their academic pursuits. Recognitions were also extended to key individuals for their contributions to engineering education, including ABU’s Vice-Chancellor, the COREN President, the NSE President, the Guest Lecturer, and the Managing Director of Kaduna Refinery.
