Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) will confer honorary degrees on Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Sheikh Sharif Ibrahim Sale Al-Hussain during its 44th Convocation Ceremony on 25 January 2025. The ceremony will celebrate their outstanding contributions to global development and scholarship.
University Senate and Governing Council Approval
The decision to confer the honorary degrees was made during the 544th Senate meeting on 7 January 2025. The Governing Council approved the recommendation at its 207th meeting on 8 January 2025. Both recipients have accepted the honour.

About Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is a global finance expert and the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). With over 40 years of experience in international development, she served as Managing Director (Operations) at the World Bank and held two terms as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance. She played a key role in Nigeria’s debt relief negotiations and spearheaded public financial management reforms and transparency initiatives.
About Sheikh Sharif Ibrahim Sale Al-Hussain
Sheikh Sharif Ibrahim Sale is a prominent Islamic scholar from Borno State. He has authored over 500 books and made significant contributions to Islamic studies, including philosophy, jurisprudence, and Qur’anic sciences. He has served on various government advisory committees and represented Nigeria in international delegations. His scholarship has earned him global recognition.
