Anita Okunde, a 20-year-old Nigerian student at the University of Oxford, has made history by becoming the first Black woman elected President of the prestigious Oxford Union.

Anita, currently studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), is an award-winning activist and public speaker renowned for her advocacy for intersectional climate justice and feminism. Her election marks a historic moment for inclusivity and representation at the Oxford Union, one of the world’s oldest debating societies.
Celebrating the Milestone
Expressing her gratitude, Anita shared on social media:
- “All the glory be to God honestly,” referencing John 15:7.
- She also stated on X (formerly Twitter): “First EVER Black woman elected as Oxford Union President & a proud state school President, built not bought, a dying breed! It has been an honour, and I cannot wait to serve as your president.”
Leadership Vision
Anita’s presidency aims to address underrepresentation in leadership, enhance accessibility for students with disabilities, and improve the Union’s financial inclusivity for diverse students. She also plans to create opportunities for marginalized voices, making the Union more welcoming and inclusive.

In the recent election for Trinity Term 2024, Anita secured 564 first-preference votes, edging out Siddhant Nagrath by 44 votes.
