The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, founded in 1981, were once known as the Cleveland Lumberjacks during the 1990s. Today, they are the proud AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, a connection that is reflected in their logo design.
1999–2004: The Early Logo
The first logo of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins was introduced in 1999. This design featured a circular badge with horizontal stripes in white and yellow at its center, encircled by a wide red frame with white and yellow outlines. The wordmark was displayed around the perimeter in bold, rounded serif type, all in white. At the center of the badge, a caricature of a penguin in ice skates holding a hockey stick was featured, with a color scheme of black, white, and red.
2004–2017: A Subtle Redesign
In 2004, the Penguins’ logo underwent a color palette update. The yellow lines in the badge were replaced with lighter olive tones, shifting the overall feel of the design to one that appeared more refined and professional. While the other elements of the logo remained the same, the new color scheme brought a softer, more balanced look, making the emblem feel more polished and confident.
2017–Present: A Modern Look
The current logo, introduced in 2017, solidifies the affiliation with the Pittsburgh Penguins, featuring a strong resemblance to the NHL team's logo. The updated emblem showcases a muscular penguin playing hockey inside a yellow triangle outlined in black. Unlike the Pittsburgh version, this penguin has a more athletic build and faces a different direction, adding unique identity to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton version.
Color Scheme
The color scheme has evolved as well, maintaining a connection with the parent club’s colors. The primary colors now feature gold, black, yellow, and white. Below are the specifics of the logo's color palette:
- Black: Pantone: Black C, HEX: #000000, RGB: (0, 0, 0), CMYK: (75, 68, 67, 90)
- Gold: Pantone: 4535 C, HEX: #CFC493, RGB: (207, 196, 147), CMYK: (6, 8, 35, 12)
- Yellow: Pantone: 1235 C, HEX: #FCB514, RGB: (252, 181, 20), CMYK: (0, 31, 98, 0)
- White: HEX: #FFFFFF, RGB: (255, 255, 255), CMYK: (0, 0, 0, 0)
This modern evolution of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins logo highlights a balance between maintaining tradition and embracing contemporary design. With its clean lines, strong visuals, and bold color palette, the current logo mirrors the team's proud history while pushing forward into its future as a vital part of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ legacy.
