The University of Michigan, one of the oldest and most prestigious public research universities in the United States, has undergone several changes in its visual identity since its founding in 1817. Initially established in Detroit and later moving to Ann Arbor, the university has always valued tradition and authority, which is reflected in its logo.

The university's first official mark was its seal, which has undergone various revisions over the years. Today, the seal features traditional heraldic elements such as a shield with a book and the Lamp of Knowledge, a rising sun, the motto “Artes, Scientia, Veritas” (“Arts, Knowledge, Truth”), and the year “1817,” surrounded by the university's name in a serif font. While the seal continues to serve as the official emblem in some contexts, the iconic block “M” logo has become synonymous with the University of Michigan, particularly in athletic contexts.

The block “M” was introduced in the late 1800s, originally to represent the university’s football team. A pivotal moment in its history occurred in 1907, when thousands of students raised blue and yellow flags during a football game to form the block letter “M” in the stands, solidifying its place as a symbol of university pride. Over time, the block “M” evolved into the university's official logo and is now emblazoned on a wide range of materials, from sports uniforms to academic publications.

The font used in the logo, known as “Victors,” was specially designed for the university. It is a classic serif typeface, chosen to emphasize the institution’s long history while maintaining a timeless and modern appeal. Despite changes in typographical trends, the logo’s design has remained consistent, ensuring strong recognition and a sense of continuity.

The university's official colors are Michigan or Azure Blue (#00274c) and Maize (#ffcb05), which represent the school’s heritage and are widely used across its branding and athletic uniforms.

Today, the block “M” remains an enduring symbol of the University of Michigan, representing its deep-rooted tradition and authority, while its sleek, simple design ensures the logo remains modern and highly recognizable.
