Super 8, previously known as Super 8 Motels, is the world’s largest budget hotel chain, operating more than 2,900 properties worldwide. A subsidiary of Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, Super 8 has grown from its humble beginnings in the 1970s to become a global leader in the budget hospitality industry.

History of the Super 8 Logo

The history of the Super 8 logo is closely tied to the evolution of the brand itself. The company began as a marketing initiative to connect independently-owned hotels. It was founded by Dennis Brown and Ron Rivett in 1973, with the name Super 8 reflecting the original room rate of $8.88.

1982: The Original Logo

The first logo introduced in 1982 was designed with a clear reference to a classic house number plaque. The number “8” was the dominant feature, rendered in a bold, heavy black font. The words “Super” and “Motel” were placed above and below the number, respectively, in red letters with a squarish shape. The lower part of the word “Super” and the upper part of the word “Motel” were arched to echo the shape of the “8”.

The design included yellow segments at the top and bottom, along with black decorative elements resembling a classic plaque. A small black dot, imitating a nail, was placed above the number 8.

2008: The First Redesign

In 2008, the logo underwent a significant redesign, transitioning towards a more dynamic and minimalistic look. The number “8” was now red and italicized to add a sense of motion. The swooshes around the "8" further enhanced this feeling of movement.

The word “Motel” was dropped, and the decorative elements from the earlier design were eliminated, giving the logo a cleaner and more modern appearance. The word “Super” was rendered in a cursive script, mimicking handwriting, adding a personal touch to the brand’s identity. The color scheme included white and black highlights that added depth and dimension to the logo.

2018: A Clean and Modern Update

The 2018 logo retained many of the design elements introduced in 2008 but refined them further for a cleaner look. The italicized “8” and the cursive “Super” with swooshes remained, along with the iconic yellow background.

This update also included the addition of the “By Wyndham” tagline, linking the brand to its parent company, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts. The overall shape of the logo was changed to a rectangle, giving the design a more polished and modern feel.

Font and Color

The Super 8 logo uses two distinct fonts:

  • "Super": The bold, stylized custom handwritten font is similar to Deluge Regular, adding a unique and personalized feel to the brand.
  • "By Wyndham": This is set in a clean, modern sans-serif font, similar to P22 Underground CY Demi Petite Caps, which gives a sense of professionalism.

The color palette of the Super 8 logo includes yellow and red as the dominant colors, symbolizing energy and excitement. Black and white accents are used to convey stability and professionalism.

Legacy and Impact

Over the years, the Super 8 logo has evolved to reflect the brand’s growth and shift towards a more modern and streamlined aesthetic. From its origins as a simple, budget-friendly motel chain, Super 8 has embraced contemporary design trends, while maintaining a sense of energy and accessibility that has made it a trusted name for travelers worldwide.
