The Los Angeles Chargers, originally the San Diego Chargers, is a professional American football team based in Los Angeles, California. The team moved from San Diego to Los Angeles in 2017, marking a significant shift in the team's identity. The name "Chargers" is believed to have originated from the sound of a discharge, reminiscent of the noise heard at the Los Angeles Coliseum, which was favored by the team’s original owner, Barron Hilton.

San Diego Chargers Logo History

Since its establishment in 1960, the Chargers have undergone several logo changes. Initially, the logo featured a shield with a blue horse’s head, a white lightning bolt, and "Los Angeles Chargers" written in gold within a blue circle. When the team moved to San Diego in 1961, the logo was adjusted to reflect the new location.

  • 1961 — 1973
The blue circle and the "LA" were removed, and a "powder blue" color replaced the original deep blue in the shield, signifying the team's new identity.
  • 1974 — 1987
In this period, the logo changed significantly, introducing a side view of a football helmet. The lightning bolt shape was updated, and the color palette became darker.
  • 1988 — 2001
The logo evolved to feature an even darker navy blue, with the helmet now shown at a 3/4 view. The lightning bolt was refined to a white version outlined in gold and blue.
  • 2002 — 2006
In 2002, the helmet was removed, leaving only the arched lightning bolt similar to the design from 1974. The color scheme was adjusted slightly for a more contemporary look.
  • 2007 — 2016
A redesign in 2007 featured a golden lightning bolt with blue outlines, further modernizing the emblem while maintaining the core elements of the original design.

Symbolism

The Chargers logo represents the team's electrifying power, symbolizing energy and dynamism that fuels their determination and will to succeed.

Current Logo (Los Angeles Chargers)

After relocating to Los Angeles, the Chargers updated their logo but kept the basic elements, modifying the wordmark to reflect their new home city. The current logo features a lightning bolt, reminiscent of the 2002 design, in gold with navy blue and powder blue outlines. It is positioned above the team’s name, which is written in deep blue.

Font

The Chargers logo features a custom-designed typeface for the wordmark. This unique font is crafted specifically for the team and is consistent with the previous San Diego branding, with slight adjustments made for the “Los Angeles” version.

Colors

The official color palette of the Chargers includes:

  • Powder Blue (PMS 285 C, #0080C6)
  • Sunshine Gold (PMS 1235 C, #FFC20E)
  • White (#FFFFFF)
  • Navy Blue (Used for the wordmark and outlines)

These colors are integral to the team's identity, used across both the logo and the wordmark.
