Portland State University (PSU) is an academic institution located in Portland, Oregon, known for its high research activity and diverse academic offerings. The university's seven colleges provide bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in a variety of fields, including social sciences, business, and liberal arts. PSU is also recognized for its collaboration with national agencies and government organizations. Its athletic teams, known as the Vikings, compete in top-tier NCAA events.

History and Meaning

Founded in 1946 as the Vanport Extension Center by Edward Epler, PSU initially served as a college for World War II veterans. After the city of Vanport was destroyed by a flood in 1948, the institution earned the nickname "the school that wouldn't die" for its refusal to close. The university relocated to Portland and was renamed Portland State Extension Center in 1951. In 1955, it expanded to offer four-year degrees, changing its name to Portland State College. In 1969, it officially became Portland State University.

What is Portland State University?

PSU is a prominent research university, offering scientific and liberal arts education to students across the United States. Located in downtown Portland, the university has seven colleges and numerous departments, where students and faculty explore over 200 academic disciplines. PSU's varsity teams, under the "Vikings" name, compete in NCAA competitions, further adding to its vibrant campus life.

Logo Evolution

The Portland State University logo has evolved over time, reflecting its growth and transformation. The university's seal, used from its founding in 1946, features an outer ring with the institution's name and founding date. The center includes intertwined circles with rhombic shapes, framed by two wavy ribbons, all highlighted by intricate linework. The motto, "Doctrina Urbi Serviat" (Let Knowledge Serve the City), appears on the seal.

From 1969 to 2006, the PSU logo underwent further refinement. The current logo, introduced in 2006, consists of two main elements: a cross with three interlocking shapes that resemble the letters "P," "S," and "U," with the text "Portland State University" positioned next to it. The word "University" is downsized and placed on the second line.

Font and Colors

The PSU logo features a mix of fonts. The word "Portland State" uses a bold serif typeface, while the word "University" is set in a straight sans-serif font with wide spacing. Traditionally, the university's color palette includes green as the primary color, accented by black and white. The seal is green with black contouring and white rhombs. In the current logotype, the signature is green, while the inner links are either white or uncolored, with the text on the right in black.
