The Pinterest logo is a powerful visual identity element that has evolved significantly since the platform's launch. Starting with a cursive wordmark, it has grown into an emblematic symbol that is both elegant and meaningful, representing the core idea of the platform—pinning and sharing creative content.

Symbolism of the Pinterest Logo

The iconic symbol of Pinterest is a stylized "P," resembling a retro-inspired pin with smooth curves. Executed in a bold red-and-white color palette, this design is both timeless and functional, embodying the name and purpose of the platform. The pointed tail of the “P” cleverly mimics a pin, tying it directly to the concept of “pinning” images to digital boards, which is the foundation of Pinterest’s functionality.

Evolution of the Pinterest Logo

2010 — 2011:
The initial logo was a black cursive wordmark with a blue gradient shadow and outlines in white and gray. While visually layered, this design lacked the distinctiveness Pinterest needed and was soon replaced.

2011 — Today:
In 2011, Pinterest introduced its now-iconic red-and-white logo. The new design featured a solid red circle with a white cursive "P," styled as a pin. This emblem quickly became a defining element of Pinterest’s brand identity.

2011 — 2016:
During this period, the wordmark accompanying the emblem featured custom cursive lettering in red. The design’s unique touch was the “T” and “S” merging with an elongated tail, adding a sense of flow and creativity.

2016 — Today:
The 2016 update simplified the wordmark, adopting a bold, clean sans-serif typeface in title case. While the emblem remained unchanged, the sans-serif wordmark added modernity and balance, reflecting Pinterest’s growing presence as a serious platform in the digital world.

Controversy Over the Emblem

Pinterest’s emblem faced criticism for its similarity to the mobile app Path’s logo. Both designs featured a white cursive “P” on a red background. Path’s icon was set in a square with rounded corners, while Pinterest used a circular format. Despite opposition from Path, Pinterest successfully trademarked its emblem in 2012. The controversy highlighted how minor design overlaps could lead to brand confusion in a crowded digital space.

Icon and Its Hidden Meaning

At first glance, the Pinterest icon—a white “P” on a red circle—seems simple. However, the sharpened tail of the “P” resembles a pin, subtly tying into the platform's central concept of pinning images. The color palette of red and white conveys passion, creativity, and curiosity, resonating with the platform’s user base of imaginative individuals.

Typeface

The wordmark in Pinterest’s 2011 logo was fully custom, with each letter uniquely crafted to suit the brand’s identity. In 2016, Pinterest adopted Neue Haas Grotesk (Black weight) for its logo. The font underwent minor modifications, such as a rounded tittle for the "i" and a redesigned “s,” to harmonize better with the overall design.

Today’s Identity

Pinterest’s logo is a masterful blend of simplicity and symbolism. It reflects the platform’s purpose while being easily recognizable, adaptable, and memorable. The thoughtful integration of design elements ensures it remains a standout representation of one of the world’s most popular online services.
