The History and Meaning of the Phillies Logo
Founded in 1883, the Phillies are a professional baseball team competing in the East Division of Major League Baseball. With Citizens Bank Park as their home field, the team is owned by The Phillies Limited Partnership and managed by Sam Fuld. Over the years, the team’s logos have transitioned from detailed artistic badges to cleaner and more symbolic designs.
1900 – 1937

In 1950, the Phillies introduced a more modern logo—a red cap with a white “P.” The cap was encircled by a blue orbit, containing a red cursive “Phillies” wordmark and a white baseball. This emblem remained for nearly two decades.
1970 – 1983
The 1970 redesign introduced the famous “Phil and Phyllis” logo. The illustration depicted two Philadelphian children—a boy holding a bat and ball, trying to impress a girl. This playful and nostalgic design rested above a bold red “Phillies” wordmark enclosed in a red frame.
1984 – 1991
The 1984 version simplified the logo to a bold, red wordmark set over a red-and-white baseball, outlined in blue. An arched “Philadelphia” appeared above, creating a clean and balanced composition.
1992 – 2018
In 1992, the Phillies adopted a blue shield-shaped badge with a downward-pointing tip. A white Liberty Bell appeared in the center, while the red “Phillies” wordmark sat across it, underlined for emphasis. The badge had a thick red outline, balancing the colors and reinforcing its iconic status.
2019 – Today
The current logo retained the Liberty Bell and Phillies wordmark but removed the blue background and frame.
