The Peoria Rivermen are a professional ice hockey team based in Peoria, Illinois, and their visual identity has evolved over the years, reflecting the changing nature of the team and the leagues they’ve played in. The franchise has existed in several iterations, and each version of the team has had distinct logos, yet all have adhered to a water-themed design, a nod to Peoria’s location as a river port city.
The team’s logo history began in 1984 and has undergone numerous changes as the franchise moved through different leagues, with the current version being the fourth iteration of the Peoria Rivermen.
- 1984 – 1996: The first logo was created in 1984 and was a playful and bold design. It featured a caricature of a sailor in a dark blue uniform holding a hockey stick and puck, with a yellow and red ship’s wheel behind him. The wordmark below the logo was in a serif typeface, shadowed and slanted, giving the logo a dynamic feel.
- 1996 – 2005: The redesign in 1996 retained the sailor as the central figure but introduced a new composition. The captain was shown gripping a steering wheel, and the red cityscape of Peoria was depicted inside the wheel. The wordmark was updated to feature the word “Peoria” in an arch and changed to a sharper, more modern design in dark blue and yellow. The puck in the sailor’s mouth was also reworked to white.
- 2005 – 2013: The 2005 logo redesign focused primarily on color changes. The red was removed from the emblem, and the design was shifted to a cooler palette of white and blue. This change made the logo appear more professional and polished, while still maintaining the original silhouette and symbolic elements.
- 2013 – 2015: In 2013, the franchise returned to its roots by incorporating elements from the team's earlier logos. The ship’s wheel, a core element of the original design, was brought back, this time featuring the Peoria skyline inside the wheel. The skyline was represented in white against a gold backdrop, with the Illinois River depicted in navy blue and gold.
- 2015 – Today: The most recent logo, introduced in 2015, made some subtle adjustments, primarily with the color scheme and placement of elements. The colors of the city skyline inside the wheel were reversed, and the wordmark was simplified to just “Rivermen,” placed across the middle of the wheel. The team’s official colors of red, navy blue, white, and gold were maintained, reinforcing the continuity of the franchise’s identity.
The Peoria Rivermen's logos, while evolving, continue to pay tribute to their river port heritage and the team’s connection to the region, while also reflecting the growth and maturity of the franchise over the years.
