The use of Donald Duck in the Oregon Ducks' visual identity is rooted in a long-standing relationship with Disney. In 1947, the university’s athletic director, a friend of Walt Disney, received permission to use the iconic cartoon character as part of the university’s mascot. This relationship continued even after Disney’s passing in 1966, with a written contract signed between the university and the company.

The Oregon Ducks' football, basketball, softball, and baseball teams have all contributed to the university’s athletic legacy. The football team, one of the most successful in the Pac-12 Conference, has won 11 conference titles as of 2019.
