The Los Angeles Chargers are a professional American football team that originally began in Los Angeles in 1960 before relocating to San Diego. The team returned to Los Angeles in 2017, adopting its original name after spending several decades in San Diego.
Brand Overview
The Chargers had a strong debut in the AFL during their first season in 1960 but faced challenges in subsequent years. After a rough 1962 season, the team recovered, securing the Western Division title in 1963 and 1964. Despite struggles in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including a dismal first season following the AFL-NFL merger, the team found success in 1978 under Coach Don Coryell. However, the Chargers faced another period of instability until Coach Bobby Ross led the team to AFC Championship in 1994 and a Super Bowl appearance in 1995. Unfortunately, they lost, which led to a period of stagnation until the early 2000s. After several coaching changes, the team ultimately decided to return to Los Angeles in 2017.
Los Angeles Chargers Logo History
The Chargers' logo has evolved over time, consistently featuring a lightning bolt, the team's iconic symbol. The first logo, created in 1960, depicted a horse silhouette with a lightning bolt and the “LA” lettering. After relocating to San Diego in 1961, the logo was modified by removing the "LA" and brightening the color palette.
In 1974, the team introduced a new logo with a bold yellow lightning bolt outlined in white on a blue helmet, a design still recognized today. Subsequent redesigns refined the logo's colors and shape, with the bolt becoming thinner and the helmet shade darkening in the 1980s.
From 2002–2006, the logo featured a simple arched lightning bolt in white and blue on a plain background. In 2007, the logo was adjusted with darker shades of blue and yellow. The team’s return to Los Angeles in 2017 brought a new, experimental design with a stylized "LA" and lightning bolt, but this was short-lived. By 2020, the team adopted a retro look, bringing back vibrant blue and yellow colors, with the bolt placed above the team’s name in a bold font.
Font and Colors
The Chargers use a custom font for their logo, characterized by heavy italics with sharp features on the uppercase characters. This design evokes power and precision. The team's color palette has consistently included bright yellow and blue, symbolizing energy and speed. The powder blue, sunshine gold, and white are the primary colors, creating a sense of vibrancy and movement.
Uniforms
The team’s uniforms use a combination of powder blue, sunshine gold, and white. The primary design features powder blue jerseys with yellow shoulder bolts and white pants. Alternate uniforms include a midnight blue and a dark blue variation, with the yellow bolts outlined in white.
Helmets
The Chargers' helmets are bright white with a yellow lightning bolt outlined in sky blue, a classic and striking design. They also have alternate helmet options, with darker blue and yellow variations.
Home Ground
Since 2020, the Los Angeles Chargers have played at SoFi Stadium, a shared venue with the Los Angeles Rams. Before moving to SoFi, the Chargers played in several arenas, including the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Qualcomm Stadium. For a brief period between 2017-2020, the team played at Dignity Health Sports Park while SoFi was under construction.
