Founded in 1916 as a sock manufacturing company, Kappa is an iconic Italian brand known today for its stylish sportswear and streetwear. Established officially in 1967 in Turin, Kappa has become a symbol of vintage street style and contemporary athletic fashion.

The Meaning Behind Kappa

Named after the Greek letter "Kappa," the brand's name reflects simplicity and sophistication. Its logo, a striking emblem of two silhouettes sitting back-to-back, represents equality, support, and the balance between men and women.

Kappa’s enduring success stems from its commitment to blending authentic athletic wear with chic fashion, making it a go-to for both athletes and streetwear enthusiasts.

Who Owns Kappa?

Kappa was founded by Marco Boglione in 1978 and is now owned by BasicNet, a company that also manages brands like K-Way, Superga, and Briko. Originally focused on producing socks and underwear, Kappa’s pivot to sportswear in the 1960s marked the start of its rise as a global brand.

Kappa Logo Evolution

Kappa’s logo has undergone several transformations over the years, evolving from a traditional design to the iconic “Omini” emblem we recognize today.

1916 – 1956

The first logo of Maglificio Calzificio Torinese (Kappa’s original name) featured a sophisticated eagle carrying a circle with the “MCT” monogram.

1956 – 1958

With the name change to Kontrollen, the logo introduced the letter “K” in bold black, set against a bright pink oval-shaped shield.

1958 – 1967

The name “Kappa” appeared alongside the “K,” which was now styled with a white tank top. The logo adopted a serif font and a dark gold palette, exuding a vintage charm.

1967 – 1969

The Kappa name was officially registered, and the logo shifted to a minimalist red wordmark with thick, confident lines.

1969 – 1978: The Birth of the Omini

This period marked the creation of the iconic “Omini” logo, featuring a man and woman sitting back-to-back. This emblem was born accidentally during a swimwear photoshoot and symbolizes equality and mutual support. Originally presented in solid red, the Omini became a defining symbol for the brand.

1978 – 1984

In 1978, the logo added the “Kappa Sport” wordmark below the Omini emblem, rendered in a thin red sans-serif font. By 1981, the word “Sport” was removed, leaving the clean and timeless design that remains a cornerstone of Kappa’s identity.

1984 – 1994

The wordmark underwent a redesign with bolder, stronger lettering, reflecting the brand’s growing influence and status in the fashion world.

1994 – Today

The modern Kappa logo features the iconic Omini and wordmark in white, outlined in red. This sleek, contemporary design highlights the brand’s heritage and enduring relevance in the world of fashion and sportswear.

Font and Colors

Kappa’s logo uses a custom sans-serif typeface with bold, clean lines that convey strength and confidence. Its color palette—featuring red, white, and black—balances boldness and simplicity, aligning with its identity as a high-quality, stylish brand.

Why Kappa Stands Out

Kappa’s blend of fashion-forward designs with functional sportswear has solidified its position as a leader in athletic and streetwear fashion. From its beginnings as a sock company to its transformation into a global icon, Kappa continues to represent individuality, equality, and timeless style.

Whether worn by athletes or fashion enthusiasts, Kappa’s legacy as an influential and innovative brand remains strong, making it a staple in wardrobes around the world.
