Hungry Jack's, the Australian fast food chain, operates as a franchise based on the Burger King model but is owned by Competitive Foods Australia, founded by Jack Cowin. Despite following the same menu as Burger King, the branding and visual identity are distinctive, having evolved to reflect local preferences and the unique ownership structure.
The Hungry Jack's brand first emerged in Australia in 1972, with its name derived from the founder Jack Cowin. The initial logo, introduced in 1971, was essentially a direct copy of Burger King’s logo, featuring two brown buns enclosing bold red lettering in a rounded sans-serif font. The word "Jack's" was notably larger, emphasizing the name of the founder.
In 1995, the logo underwent a refresh, adopting a brighter and cleaner color palette. The brown buns became more orange, and the typeface was modernized, although it retained the rounded corners, giving the logo a friendly and welcoming appearance.
In 1997, as Burger King updated its own visual identity, Hungry Jack's followed suit. The buns became more yellow and even, while the lettering took on a thicker, more classic red shade. This iteration of the logo included an alternative version with an outlined emblem on a solid red background.
In 2001, a new logo was designed featuring enlarged red lettering between two small orange buns, outlined in a thick blue frame. However, this version was never used, as the chain briefly left the Australian market.
Throughout its history, Hungry Jack’s logo has kept elements consistent with the Burger King brand while also introducing subtle refinements. The modern logo uses bold red lettering in a smooth sans-serif font, with warm orange and red tones that evoke energy and a welcoming atmosphere. These design choices reflect the brand’s commitment to creating a vibrant and dynamic fast-food experience in Australia.
