Meaning and History of the Cincinnati Bearcats

The Bearcats' name originated during a 1914 football game, when player Leonard K. Baehr was referred to as "Baehr-cat" after a match with the Wildcats. This nickname stuck, and the Bearcat mascot became part of the university’s athletics. Though the team had been known as the Bearcats since then, their first graphical emblem did not appear until the late 1950s. Initially, the team logos primarily consisted of classic collegiate lettering in the university's signature red and black color scheme.

Logo Evolution

1959 – 1968: The Naive Bearcat

The 1959 logo was a charmingly naive and cartoonish rendition of a bearcat. The mascot sported an angry grin, exuding an aura of confidence, though the execution was somewhat playful rather than menacing. The design featured the mascot’s head surrounded by two black ribbons, one arched above with the word "Cincinnati" and another horizontal one overlapping the bearcat's body with the word "Bearcats." The logo used uppercase white letters in a solid sans-serif typeface, making it both bold and easily recognizable.

1983 – 1989: Simpler and Sleeker

In 1983, the logo took on a more minimalistic form, focusing solely on the bearcat's head. The drawing was black on a white background, enclosed in a double circular frame, but without any lettering or color accents. The mascot's image was somewhat harder to distinguish due to its messier lines, but the design nevertheless remained in use for six years.

1990 – 2005: Professional and Refined

A major redesign came in 1990, marking the first polished version of the Bearcats logo. This emblem featured a light gray bearcat with a red tongue, and red lettering at the top of the logo. The mascot was drawn in a more professional and refined manner, with clean lines and a clear representation of the animal. The most notable feature was the mascot’s paw raised above a red-underlined letter “C”, with the black claws curving over it, forming the modern and iconic symbol of the Bearcats.

2006 – Today: Simplified and Iconic

In 2006, the logo underwent another significant simplification. The design was minimized, removing much of the extraneous detail. The bearcat’s four claws were now curved over a bold, black letter “C”, drawn in a sharp and elegant typeface. These claws took on a unique, comma-like appearance, drawn in varying sizes, which made the design feel dynamic and distinctive. The red underline remained as a nod to previous iterations of the logo, but overall, this version was more streamlined and sophisticated.

The current Cincinnati Bearcats logo remains a timeless emblem of collegiate athletics, with its strong, bold imagery, dynamic claws, and modern typeface.
