Burberry is a luxury British fashion brand, established in 1856 in England. Renowned for its iconic trench coats and signature checkered patterns, Burberry has become one of the most famous fashion labels globally. The brand operates nearly 500 boutiques worldwide, offering a variety of luxury fashion items.
Brand Overview
Burberry gained international fame with its trench coats, which feature a distinctive checkered interior. The brand's visual identity has undergone several transformations, with its equestrian symbol, depicting a galloping horse, being central to its identity for over a century. In 2018, the company made a bold decision to remove the equestrian from its primary logo to embrace a more modern and youthful design.
Burberry Logo History
The first Burberry logo, created in 1901, was a red emblem featuring an equestrian with a pike and shield. The flag on the pike displayed the word "Prorsum" and an ornate letter "B". The logo was complemented by the brand name in bold, capitalized serif typography.
In 1968, the logo's wordmark became the focal point, with the equestrian symbol reduced to a simple black silhouette. The wordmark now included the "Of London" tagline, signifying the brand’s heritage and prestige.
In 1999, the logo was rebalanced. The equestrian was enlarged with white contours, and the wordmark was refined to a sleek serif typeface, resembling the Bodoni family. The tagline was shortened to just "London", highlighting the brand's London roots.
In 2018, Burberry introduced a new visual identity, removing the equestrian from the official logo. This redesign symbolized a shift toward a more modern, progressive, and energetic brand identity. The wordmark was used alone, sometimes accompanied by a "London England" tagline.
The 2023 redesign brought significant change, adopting a new typeface that was stylish, elegant, and more playful. The uppercase wordmark now features unique serifs, giving it a more feminine and lively character. The font reflects a nostalgic yet contemporary feel, blending classic and modern aesthetics.
Symbolism
The equestrian symbol, which carried a shield, represented qualities like honor, grace, and protection. It reinforced the brand's association with luxury, nobility, and strength.
Font
The current Burberry wordmark uses a refined sans-serif typeface, which resembles Urania Extra Bold, known for its thick lines, distinct cuts, and angular shapes. This modern font maintains the brand's strong, elegant identity while adding a contemporary flair
