Aphex Twin is the stage name of Richard David James, a British musician known for his unique contributions to electronic music, particularly within the genre of intelligent dance music in the 1990s.

James, born in 1971, started performing in local clubs and free parties in the late 1980s. Initially a rave DJ, he released his debut EP Analogue Bubblebath in 1991. The roots of the Aphex Twin logo can be traced back to 1991 when graphic designer Paul Nicholson hand-drew it using circle templates and rulers. The design was inspired by an etching that James had scratched onto the back of his travel case. Nicholson mentioned that the logo was meant to be "amorphic and soft in form," reflecting James' preference for rounded shapes over sharp lines.

The logo was initially created for another project, a skatewear label called Anarchic Adjustment, who had asked Nicholson to design an “alien” vibe emblem. However, the label rejected this version, and when Richard David James saw it, he asked Nicholson to adapt it for his own use. The first official appearance of the logo was on the cover of Selected Ambient Works 85-92 in 1992. It was later featured prominently on Ambient Works Vol. II.

There was a ten-year gap in the logo's use on album covers between 1996 and 2006, but it made a comeback on Chosen Lords and Syro. More recently, James has used the logo to hint at upcoming releases, with spray-painted versions of the emblem appearing on pavements in New York before the release of Syro in 2014 and in various global locations before the Collapse EP.

The logo is widely recognized as an abstract representation of the letter "A," but its true meaning remains ambiguous, adding to the mystique of the artist and his work.
