The symbol of American Express is a heraldic image of a Roman gladiator, rendered in a turquoise-green and gray color palette. The gladiator's portrait is enclosed in a vertically oriented oval frame. While this symbol is prominent on all cards and checks issued by the company, the main logo used by American Express typically only features white lettering on a blue square background.

History of the American Express Logo:

Though American Express (founded in 1850) has maintained a remarkably consistent visual identity, the company has undergone only three major redesigns throughout its history. The current logo, which was introduced in 1975, remains largely unchanged but has been refined over time to maintain modernity and relevance.

  1. 1850 – 1890 (First Logo): The original logo from 1850 featured an elegant black-and-white design. It depicted a large chest with the "Am. Ex. Co" lettering in white on it, guarded by a black dog. The dog lay atop the chest, creating a peaceful, refined image.
  2. 1890 – 1918 (Redesign with White Bulldog): In 1890, the dog in the logo was changed to a white bulldog. The "Am. Ex. Co" inscription was placed on the bulldog's side, while the chest was inscribed with the full name, "American Express Co". The color scheme remained black and white.
  3. 1918 – 1951 (Globe Design): A major redesign occurred in 1918 when American Express introduced a blue and red globe, adorned with white meridians. The globe was framed by the words "American" and "Express" in red, and a "World Service" tagline appeared on the globe. This was the first step in moving away from animal imagery and toward a more professional, global aesthetic.
  4. 1951 – 1975 (Introduction of the Gladiator Symbol): In 1951, American Express introduced its most iconic symbol: the Roman gladiator. The gladiator's portrait was placed within an elliptical frame. The color scheme was still black and white, but the gladiator's strong and dignified appearance became a recognizable emblem of the brand. This design laid the foundation for the modern American Express identity.
  5. 1975 – 2018 (Blue Background and Dynamic Design): In 1975, American Express introduced a refined logo, keeping the gladiator symbol but updating the overall design to look more contemporary and professional. The blue square background was introduced for the wordmark, with a more minimalist design for the text. A slight gradient was added to the background in 2006 to give the logo a more dynamic and sleek appearance.
  6. 2018 – Today (Refinement and Modernization): In 2018, the design was further refined by the famous design agency Pentagram. The blue used for the background was deepened, giving the logo a more confident and trustworthy look. The letter "C" in "American Express" was modified so that it overlapped with the following "A", adding a subtle, modern twist. The ends of the "S" were also smoothed with diagonal cuts, making the logo feel more elegant and stylish.

Symbolism and Meaning of the Logo:

The gladiator in the logo symbolizes strength, professionalism, and trustworthiness, embodying the values of American Express as a premium financial services company. The gladiator's historic and dignified image conveys reliability and protection, making it a fitting symbol for a brand that deals with finance and transactions.

The blue square with the white lettering used in the current logo is clean and modern, providing a sense of confidence and sophistication. Blue is often associated with excellence, optimism, and freedom, while the white lettering ensures clarity and prominence. This simple yet effective color scheme reinforces the brand’s reputation as a leading, forward-thinking financial institution.

Font and Color:

  • Font: The font used in the current American Express logo is sleek and modern with slightly refined letterforms. The subtle overlap between the letters "C" and "A" enhances the logo's contemporary appeal.
  • Color: The primary color of the American Express logo is a rich blue, paired with white for the lettering. This combination conveys professionalism and trust, while the darker blue evokes stability and confidence.

The American Express logo has evolved into one of the most iconic and trusted symbols in the world. Its combination of the gladiator portrait and a modern, minimalist wordmark reflects both its rich history and its contemporary position as a leader in the global financial services market.
