The American Automobile Association (AAA) logo has undergone only five redesigns throughout its over 110-year history, gradually evolving to become brighter and more compact.
1906 – 1915
The original logo, introduced in 1906, was elegant and delicate, featuring two intertwined wheels with the inscription "American Automobile Association" around the perimeter. The "AAA" letters were placed within three segments of the design, creating a confident yet playful look.
1915 – 1922
In the first redesign of 1915, the wheels were refined, and the lettering was removed from the perimeter. However, the three "A"s remained, now rendered in a thinner, more sophisticated typeface than in the previous version.
1922 – 1983
This version introduced color to the logo, with a red shade distinct from the current one. The logo featured a single ellipse in place of the automobile wheels, with the "A"s becoming simpler and bolder, and the central "A" being the largest. The design became more monolithic, compact, and legible, marking a shift toward the logo's modern look.
1983 – 1997
The 1983 redesign made the logo sleeker and sharper, with redrawn lettering that featured elongated lines and overlapping bars. The oval frame was modernized, with thinner upper and bottom parts, adding a more contemporary feel to the logo.
1997 – Present
The most recent redesign, in 1997, introduced a delicate blue orbit behind the logo, placed diagonally to the right. This added a sense of lightness and style, enhancing the logo's simplicity while reflecting professionalism and reliability.
The AAA logo uses Pantone 485 red (#D81E05) and Pantone 287 blue (#003893), with metallic shades like Pantone 877 Silver and Pantone 873 Metallic Gold used for special references. The font is traditional with varying line widths, distinct from the official Frutiger Bold Italic used for the association’s branding.
