History and Background of Obong University

Obong University, a private institution located in Obong Ntak, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, has deep Christian roots and a strong focus on education. Sponsored by the Rivergate Church of Christ in Madison, Tennessee, USA, Obong University maintains close connections to the Churches of Christ. The institution began its journey in 1997 as the African College of Management, before being renamed the University of Africa in 1998. Over the years, the university has built strong ties with the Christian community in Mt. Morris, Michigan, which also sponsors Obong Christian School—a school founded in 1986 that has educated thousands of students from Nigeria and neighboring countries.

Obong University achieved full university status on May 2, 2007, largely due to the efforts of Dr. Moses Akpanudo, who spearheaded the campaign for university recognition. Dr. Akpanudo was supported by his colleagues in the United States and Nigeria, as well as by local and international Christian communities. The institution continues to thrive, offering a range of academic programs while staying true to its Christian values and mission.
