History of the Nigerian Defence Academy

The Nigerian Defence Academy was founded in February 1964, succeeding the Royal Military Forces Training College (RMFTC), which was initially set up by the British and renamed the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC) after Nigeria’s independence. The NDA’s first class comprised 62 cadets, with most of the instructors being officers from the Indian Army. The academy follows the training model of the Indian National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla, Pune.

By 1978, the NDA had transitioned to an all-Nigerian training staff, and by 1981, it expanded to include training for foreign military personnel. In 1985, NDA began offering undergraduate programs, and it now offers postgraduate programs for both military and civilian students, including MSc and Ph.D. programs. The primary mission remains to train officer cadets through the Regular Combatant Course, a five-year program focusing on military skills, academic knowledge, and character development. Upon completion, cadets are awarded a bachelor’s degree and commissioned into the rank of second lieutenant in the Army or equivalent ranks in the Navy and Air Force.

Until 2011, the NDA was an all-male institution, but in September 2011, it welcomed its first cohort of female cadets. The current total enrollment at the academy is around 2,500 cadets.
