Niger Delta University (NDU) is a state-owned university located in Bayelsa State, southern Nigeria, on Wilberforce Island. Established in 2000, the university serves as a hub for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. NDU was founded by the then Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha, in 2002 to provide quality education to the people of the Niger Delta and beyond. With two main campuses in Amassoma and Yenagoa, the university also operates the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH) at Okolobiri. NDU is fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

The establishment of Niger Delta University in 2000 marked a major milestone in the educational and socioeconomic development of Bayelsa State and Nigeria at large. The university began its academic activities in the 2001–2002 session, with the first class of students graduating in the 2004–2005 academic year.
The initial enrollment of 1,039 students in the first year quickly grew to 4,636 by the 2003–2004 session and exceeded 10,294 by 2006–2007. The university adheres to the student admission quotas set by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and has expanded both its academic staff and non-teaching staff to meet its growing demand.
