MAPOLY was originally established as Ogun State Polytechnic by the military government of Brigadier Harris Eghagha in 1980. Although the polytechnic was initially conceived by the military government, it was completed under the administration of Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, the then Governor of Ogun State. The institution operated from two temporary campuses in Oke-Egunya and Onikolobo, Abeokuta, before relocating to its permanent site at Ojere in 1985.

Following the death of Chief MKO Abiola in 1998, the polytechnic was renamed Moshood Abiola Polytechnic in recognition of his contributions and support for the institution.
