History and Development

The idea of establishing LASU dates back to April 1981, when an ad-hoc committee led by Dr. Femi Agbalajobi was tasked with exploring the possibility of converting Lagos State College of Science and Technology (LASCOTECH) into a university. While the committee advised against the conversion, a subsequent 12-man technical committee headed by Dr. Abisogun Leigh in 1982 recommended the creation of a new multi-campus, non-residential university—Lagos State University (LASU).

The Lagos State Government approved the plan, and the university officially began operations in October 1983, with campuses in Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe. Initially, LASU offered courses in Law, Humanities, Sciences, and Education, admitting a modest 375 students in its first academic year. Over the years, LASU has grown significantly, now enrolling over 43,000 students across its three major campuses.

Campuses

LASU operates three major campuses:

  1. Ojo Campus: The main campus houses the central administration and faculties such as Arts, Education, Law, Management Sciences, Science, and Social Sciences. The campus is also home to the School of Communication, School of Transport, and the Postgraduate School.
  2. Ikeja Campus: The College of Medicine (LASUCOM) is located here, offering programs in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and related health sciences.
  3. Epe Campus: This campus accommodates the Faculty of Engineering, School of Agriculture, and the Institute for Organic Agriculture and Green Economy.
