Lagos Enforces Ban on Single-Use Plastics Starting January 2025

In a significant environmental initiative, the Lagos State Government is set to enforce a ban on single-use plastics (SUPs) beginning January 2025. This move aims to tackle plastic waste and promote sustainability across the state, ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for all.

Overview of the Single-Use Plastics Ban

The ban, which includes items like styrofoam plates, plastic straws, single-use cutlery, and thin nylon bags (less than 40 microns), was initially announced in January 2024. Following a one-year grace period to allow stakeholders to adjust, the Lagos State Government will start enforcing these restrictions in January 2025. The enforcement plan was reaffirmed during an Engagement Workshop held on October 3rd in Ikeja.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

The state is introducing an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy, focusing on plastic items such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), sachets, and thicker carrier bags (40 microns or more). This policy will hold producers responsible for the entire lifecycle of their plastic products, including their collection, recycling, and disposal. By holding producers accountable, Lagos State aims to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste.

Establishment of the Plastic Waste Management Fund

To support plastic waste management, Lagos State is creating a Plastic Waste Management Fund. This fund will be jointly managed by the State Government, producers, and Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs). It will be funded by contributions from plastic producers and major importers, helping to finance plastic waste collection, recycling, and disposal initiatives throughout the state.

Awareness Campaign and Stakeholder Engagement

The recent Engagement Workshop consolidated earlier agreements with stakeholders and marked the launch of a comprehensive advocacy and awareness campaign. This campaign aims to educate producers, stakeholders, and the general public on the new regulations and promote sustainable practices.

By enforcing this ban, Lagos State is taking a proactive approach to safeguarding the environment, enhancing public health, and fostering a sustainable future for its residents.
