Law is the training to becoming a Lawyer. It is an Art profession commonly referred to as the Legal Profession. It deals with the study, development and application of laws. In Nigeria, graduates of Law School practice as Barristers and Solicitors.
Also, in Nigeria, Law students after graduation from the University must enroll in Nigeria Law School and be trained and licensed in hands-on practices of the law and court procedures by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). This implies that only graduate of Law School can be called Lawyers or Barristers, and as such, only them can practice law.
Students looking forward to study Law in the higher institution should have a good secondary school foundational knowledge of Government, Economics, Civic Education, CRS/IRS, English Language amd other electives.
It gets better. Lawyers have areas of specialty and their definite niches. That is to say a lawyer is not just a lawyer, but has to be a particular kind of lawyer. Three titles that are common in the legal domain are Lawyers, Attorneys and Counsels.
Lawyers are employed in law firms or private practices and usually advise clients about their legal issues and how to move forward.
Attorneys consult with clients like lawyers do, but are much more likely to go beyond the initial consultation and represent the client in courtroom proceedings.
Counsels are lawyers who are employed by a company or organization. Not being employed at a law firm, counsels act solely on behalf of that company or organization.
