Fila’s journey to becoming a globally recognized brand is closely tied to its iconic F-box logo. First introduced in the 1970s, this simple yet striking design became a cornerstone of the brand's identity. By the late 1980s, Fila expanded the emblem to include its full name, creating a logo that remains largely unchanged to this day.
Origins and History
Founded in 1911 in the small town of Biella, Italy, Fila initially specialized in producing high-quality clothing for the residents of the Italian Alps. Over time, the company shifted its focus to athletic wear, gaining a reputation for its stylish and functional designs. Since 2007, Fila has been headquartered in South Korea, marking a new chapter in its global expansion.
The F-box Logo
The original F-box logo features a stylized "F" inside a dark blue square with a white background. The “F” is divided into two parts: a bold red horizontal bar on top and a vertical blue section below that resembles an “L” rotated 90 degrees. This distinctive design was widely recognized thanks to endorsements by legendary athletes, including Swedish tennis icon Björn Borg, mountain climber Reinhold Messner, and alpine ski racer Ingemar Stenmark in the 1970s and 1980s.
Current Emblem
In the late 1980s, Fila evolved its logo to include the brand name in the same modern style as the F-box design. The updated logo features lowercase, snake-like letters in dark blue. The “A” has a unique look with a lowered horizontal bar and no gap between itself and the “L”, creating a fluid, continuous form. In some variations, the “A” includes a red fill or outline, adding a pop of color to the design.
Typeface
The Fila wordmark is a custom design, but a similar look can be found in the Contemporary ONE typeface by Yuliyan Ilev. Released in 2010, this font mimics the distinct shapes of Fila’s letters while extending the style to other characters not found in the logo.
Colors
Fila’s color palette predominantly features dark blue, red, and white, representing values like energy (red) and reliability (blue). Over the years, the shades of blue have varied slightly, but the overall combination has remained consistent, reflecting a timeless and dynamic aesthetic that resonates with the sports world.
Fila’s logo, with its bold design and universal appeal, continues to symbolize the brand’s commitment to quality, innovation, and style.
