The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has withdrawn all corps members from Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, in Kwara State following an alleged assault on a female corps member by some teachers.
Alleged Assault Incident
Reports indicate that the incident involved a female corps member serving in the junior school. She was reportedly assaulted by a group of female teachers for allegedly failing to greet them properly. Witnesses claim the teachers beat her, tore her NYSC T-shirt, and one even slapped her.
The corps member had visited the school to collect her clearance letter when the confrontation occurred.
NYSC Response
The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Y. D. Ahmed, visited the school on Monday during a routine inspection of the ongoing Batch C, Stream 2 orientation in Yikpata. Concerned for the safety of other corps members, he ordered the temporary withdrawal of all NYSC personnel from both the junior and senior schools.
Oladipo Morakinyo, the NYSC Public Relations Officer in Kwara State, confirmed the withdrawal, stating it was a precautionary measure while a government panel investigates the case.
Government’s Stance
The Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, has condemned the assault and emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation. A panel has been set up to probe the matter and address any safety concerns.
Broader Implications
This incident has reignited concerns about the treatment of corps members in schools. NYSC officials and education authorities are urged to take decisive steps to safeguard corps members serving across the country and prevent such occurrences in the future.
Corps members nationwide are advised to report any mistreatment promptly and prioritize their personal safety.
